How would I do a Google search for something that happened 20 years ago in a small town?

My friend told me the sad story about how his Aunt and her 4 children were in a car driving and a large tree fell on it killing the 3 kids in the back seat. It happened when he was 8 so it would have been about 20 years ago. It was in a small town in Oregon so I wonder if maybe the only information available would be local resources and records. Otherwise, I tried Google, but for a story where I have such vague details it’s hard to narrow down the search. Any ideas?

You would have to pray that the newspaper sources that covered it would have converted their old print plates into a readily available edition. I wouldn’t count on it though 20 years ago.

What you might be able to do is call the newspaper that would have covered it and ask them if they could send you a reprint of the edition. It might be some $ though to do that.

Best of luck,
Chad

You’ll need all the information you can get from your friend about this — the name of the town and the names of all the people involved. There would be documents at the police department and likely at a medical center there. The town may have a small paper but you can’t tell if they covered the story until you look for it. You’ll also need the exact date to make your life easier. You may interview people in the town if you decide to visit. Local Churches might be a good place to start if the aunt was a member of the church.

    Hmm…

And now it occurs to me:

Why not just pick up the phone and call the aunt if she is still alive.

That’s the best answer. Easy peezy.

If you are trying to keep your research secret from your friend, your road will be long and hard, padowan.

That information is probably not available on a digital medium.

You local library generally keeps all records on microfilm, still to this day they do….

You will have to review that film to find the article….probably front page news….and print off a copy…
