SEO: How to approach companies?

In my local area I've come across several websites that could use my help in regards to SEO. How should I approach them to offer my services?

You need to appeal on a profit basis. Most companies fail to fully grasp the impact better search rankings can have on their bottom line, and won't appreciate technical information about SEO. If you can calculate their reach based on detailed keyword research and their current rankings, and then explain in simple terms by how much you could increase their reach and therefore their profit, you might have a fighting chance.

Prepare a personalized presentation for each one of them stating how you could help them; and the results you can bring in; and send it to their mail; and fix up an appointment; or call them.

Please make sure that you are contacting the right person who could understand you and is capable of taking decisions.
